Moonlight Feels Right

Author Michael H. Hanson is now promoting his wild science fiction short story, “Moonlight Feels Right,” for consideration by Readers of Locus Magazine and Members of the SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) toward Nomination in the short fiction categories of the 2026 Locus Awards and the 2026 Nebula Awards.

Michael’s weird tale was published this year in RAINBOWS AREN’T JUST FOR LEPRECHAUNS: A Speculative Anthology Reimagining Colors (published by Purple Toga Publications on March 17, 2025).

Set in a series of futuristic underground cities within the Earth’s Moon, “Moonlight Feels Right” takes place in a reality where Terran Colonists who, because of the power limitations placed on their first Lunar Generation, genetically altered their eyes to see better in dark surroundings while simultaneously seeding recently excavated giant caverns with multi-colored fluorescent fungus, thus creating one of the most beautiful and surreal interior landscapes in the solar system.

High on the hubris of their achievement, later Lunar generations created self-generating epidermal Chromatophores and Iridophores genetically integrated into every single Lunar citizen, simultaneously creating a new third form of communication, Fulgent Divulgence, using colored light patterns on one’s skin to express one’s feelings and more.

One unimagined spin-off from this amazing discovery, was the accidental creation of The Tri-Verts, genetic threesomes, three human beings that can quickly disassemble themselves and share different limbs to alter their bodies in amazing and macabre ways. This rare variant of the human genome quickly makes the Tri-Verts much sought after sources of entertainment, a form of enslavement that eventually creates dangerous resentment.

“Moonlight Feels Right” centers on a Tri-Vert, two women and one man, revolutionaries who have decided to fight back, and win their freedom… at any cost!
